World Vision Catalogue World Vision Online Donations World Vision Christmas Cataloge

The spirit of Christmas is alive and well at Parkdale Public School.

For a third year, students at the school raised funds for World Vision Canada to assist those living in Third World countries. Through bake sales, a Christmas tot shop and a Canadian Tire money-tree raffle students in Leona Laird's Grades 7/8 class raised $1,000 for the organization bringing the three-year total to $4,000.

"We give it to World Vision and our kids go through a catalogue and pick what they want," Laird said.

The catalogue contains a variety of items ranging from fruit trees to farm animals which the students can pick and use their money to purchase. The items will then go to a community in one of the more than 150 countries World Vision operates in.

Though the class had not decided on all the items they would purchase, they agreed on solar panels for a school, items for a medical clinic and animals.

The animals, 12-year-old Mary Hoekstra said, were a wise investment.

"In past years, we did fill a stable because those things keep giving and giving because the animals will reproduce and keep carrying on," she said.

Hoekstra and classmate Jenny Ma said the program and fundraising is important because it allows the class to help others who do not live in countries as fortunate as Canada.

"We have everything we need and so much more and we want to share it with other people who don't have so much," Hoekstra said.

Ma said not only do communities on the other side of the globe benefit, but the students at Parkdale do too. Knowing their efforts are assisting the less fortunate is rewarding, she said.

Alexis O'Neil of World Vision applauded the students for showing initiative and having global minds. She said the children are learning the importance of helping others, a trait which will hopefully stay with them.

"I think it's really important because we live in a country of abundance and it's important to know there are people in the world who are just like us but don't have the same luxuries," she said. "This shows the children that you can bridge the difference and make a difference for others. Kids have a lot of power to affect the world."
