Brooke Elliott stars in “Drop Dead Diva,†premiering tonight on Lifetime.
Broadway baby Brooke Elliott makes her television debut in “Drop Dead Diva,†on Lifetime, tonight at 9 p.m.
The new series centers on a blonde bombshell model who is killed in a car accident and reincarnated as a brilliant but plus-sized lawyer (Elliott). The New York Daily News classifies the comedy alongside the likes of Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde.â€
The Boston Herald notes that Elliott is one of only a few leading ladies larger than a size 4 on TV today, something of which Elliott herself is not unaware. “Having someone in a lead role that’s not a size zero, 2 or 4 is different, and hopefully women are going to go, ‘Oh, that’s what I look like. That’s me,’†Elliott told the Boston Herald.
The show aims to be a blend of both wit and wisdom, shedding light on the negative way in which plus-sized people are sometimes treated in modern society. “I think we are conditioned to believe that beauty comes in one specific package, and it’s not true. I think that this show is able to eradicate that myth a bit,†Elliott told the Boston Herald.
EW.com reports that the fledgling show already has a long list of notable guest appearances lined up, including Liza Minnelli and Paula Abdul.
The show is set to run for 13 weeks.
