Saturday is Groundhog Day.
And while many eyes will be on Pennsylvania and Punxsutawney Phil this weekend, the Natural Science Center has its own resident expert -- Woody, a 5-year-old groundhog.
"He's been pretty reliable,†said zookeeper David Wallace. “I think he's been right three out of five times.â€
The resident rodent has been putting his forecasting skills to the test for the past five years. And this weekend Wallace says Woody is going for the gold.
"If he sees his shadow we'll have six more weeks of winter,†Wallace said. “If he doesn't we won't."
But while this may make for some light-hearted fun, is there any real scientific basis behind these predictions?
News 14 Carolina meteorologist Monte Montello said no.
In reality you could probably flip a coin, 50/50 would give you probably a better result," said Montello. "That's just a little bit too simplistic when you think about how complicated the atmosphere is and how complex weather can be."
So how long can we expect winter to hang around?
"The long-term outlook is for a warmer and drier spring than normal, which would mean that you would suspect an end to winter a little bit sooner."
You've heard it here, straight from the experts’ mouths – whichever one you chose to believe.
The Groundhog Day Celebration is this Saturday at the Natural Science Center, starting at 10 a.m. There'll also be weather demonstrations and storm tracking activities.
