Carl Peterson Carl Peterson Resigns Chiefs President And GM Peterson Stepping Down





Carl Peterson, one of the longest-serving executives in the NFL, is stepping down as president and general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, the club announced on Monday.

Peterson's tenure lasted close to 20 years, as he was hired by the late Lamar Hunt, club founder, on Dec. 19, 1988.

The team announced that Denny Thum will serve as interim president and general manager, with a search for a new GM to begin immediately.

“I am proud of my association with the Kansas City Chiefs and our many accomplishments over the last 20 years,” Peterson said in a statement. “I thank the Hunt family for the opportunity to lead the Chiefs organization and sincerely appreciate all the coaches, players, administrators and Chiefs employees with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working in my time here. Most importantly, I want to thank Chiefs fans around the country for their passionate support through the years. Chiefs fans are the finest in all of professional football.”

The Chiefs have posted a winning record in 13 of 19 seasons since Peterson joined, but are limping towards the finish this year with a 2-12 record. Kansas City blew an 18-point lead on Sunday against San Diego.

Last year, the Chiefs won just four games.

During Peterson's time, the Chiefs reached their only AFC championship game (1994) and compiled a record of 102-58 during the 1990s, one of only seven teams to hit three figures in a decade.

Kansas City neared 150 consecutive sellouts at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the toughest places for visiting NFL teams, a streak that dates back to 1991.

Prior to joining the Chiefs, Peterson was director of player personnel with the Philadelphia Eagles in the late 1970s and he then assembled the most successful franchise in the three-year history of the USFL, the Philadelphia Stars.
