America'S Got Talent Winner 2008, Who Won America S Got Talent
America'S Got Talent 2008 Winner is: Neal E. Boyd!
The opera-singing Sikeston, Mo., native and Town & Country resident took the $1 million top prize in Wednesday night’s finale of "America’s Got Talent."
Boyd cried and hugged second-place finisher Eli Mattson and host Jerry Springer as confetti fell and the talent competition’s judges stood and applauded. In the audience, friends who had flown in for the finale cheered and embraced.
"I love you, Mom," Boyd told his mother, who was watching from home. "I love you, Sikeston. I love you, Missouri."
Joking that Boyd is "such a crybaby," Springer then announced one more surprise. That was a message from Boyd’s hero, opera star Placido Domingo, who told Boyd to be proud and said, "I’m sure from today on, you have started a brilliant career."
Winning "would change my life," Boyd — whose day job is selling insurance for AFLAC in Valley Park — said before the announcement. "I love America so much for getting me to this point. I can’t thank you enough."
He has said he will use the money, which he will receive as a 40-year annuity, to study opera in the hope of popularizing the art form with those who might not have enjoyed it before.
The evening wrapped up with Boyd performing his show-stopper, "Nessun Dorma." What Springer described as "the biggest prize in entertainment history" also included a
Las Vegas show set for Oct. 17 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
More than 200,000 acts initially auditioned for the show. Among the final five, singer Queen Emily finished fifth in the competition. Singer Donald Braswell was fourth, and Nuttin’ but Strings, a violin-playing hip-hop duo, came in third.
